    Info on Protraction and Catalysts

Protraction is Magic utilizing the flow of life around us. It draws on the life force of anything around us and manipulates it to create a practical use. It is used to assist with any task, ranging from every day household chores to heavy military application or even in technology. Though not everyone is able to use Protraction, and most are never schooled in its use, it can be found most anywhere.

In technology, Protraction is used to fuel some forms of machinery. It works similar to electricity but in a way more efficient way for it has a renewable power supply due to life energy not being wasted when it travels from one place to another. However its rather difficult to construct these devices which have come to be known as Protraction Weaves.

In weaponry, Protraction can take any form from firearms in protraction weaves to enchanted weapons and armors and even the more common fireballs or lightning. Protraction can be used to create just as easily as it can be used to destroy and there are ethical laws to keep such in place, though this does not apply to War.

Natural minerals and resources can act as Catalysts; usually in the form of uncommon gems such as sapphires or emerald and diamonds.

Built on the concept of Batteries from before Ragnarok, Catalysts can be charged and used as energy packs to supply more energy to the person or weave it is coupled with. For humans it can come in the form of Accessories or fitted onto clothing, and a magician can draw on the Catalysts power in order to either cast more efficiently, or reduce the cast time of a spell. Catalysts can also be stuck in or around Protraction Weaves, sometimes permanent, and sometimes interchangeable, dependent on design and function. Charging Catalysts can be a simple or advanced task, based on what type it is and how fast the user wishes to charge the Catalyst. A Ruby catalyst for example can supply warmth and fire, but is required to charge the same way. Either through kinetic energy, next or inside of a fire, and even body warmth. Some catalysts are dangerous however, refusing to be fueled by anything but specific dangerous sources. For example an amethyst can only be charged by leeching off the human soul, which makes it incredibly slow and straining to charge.
There are some dangers with the use of catalysts. Natural energy, like soul or spiritual or elemental energy, replenishes overtime. So by charging certain types of Catalysts, there is a danger of creating too much energy and upsetting the balance of things. For example; Lets say a persons soul energy is drained from 100% to 75%, with the 25% stored in a catalyst. After a while the energy would return back to 100%, and one would be left with 125% energy total. The affects of this are random and raging anywhere from minor sickness to genetic mutation or death.

Here's a basic list of various catalysts and their effects:
Lace Agate, Moon - Charged only with exposure to the Moon.
Ruby, Fire - Charged with Heat and Fire.
Topaz, Lightning - Charged with Intense Heat, and Impact or Electrical Currents.
Tigers-Eye, Earth - Unknown charging mechanism.
Malachite, Wind - Unknown charging mechanism.
Emerald, Unknown - Unknown charging mechanism.
Sapphire, Water - Frozen, exposure to running water, calm surrounding(Unconfirmed).
Lapis Lazuli, Unknown - Unknown charging mechanism.
    Amethyst, Shadow - Soul energy.
Diamond, Any - Any charging mechanism.

Certain materials like Gold and Platinum can even enhance the effects of catalysts whereas others like Silver act as a barrier to ward off Protraction, similar to how rubber negates electricity.

Necromancy is also a form or protraction. The most common practice, even the simplest of which is difficult to master, is for the Necromancer to trap the life essence of a passing soul and bind it to a body or device. By doing so they gain complete control over every soul they trap, but have to maintain its existence with their own life force. As such, it takes a big toll on the necromancer to keep many minions and they have to sacrifice a lot to maintain them. Some devices and drugs can be used to enhance the Necromancers performance, either supplying them with more life force from elsewhere or giving them a temporary boost. It is possible for one or more Necromancers to act as a Proxy for other more powerful Necromancers, giving part of their life essence steadily to supply another's power.

Necromancy was commonly practiced but often times abused or mishandled and ultimately outlawed by King Thedran a good hundred years ago. Cultists and under-the-table Scientists and Magicians tend to practice Necromancy still to this day. As such, some Priestesses and Holymen are trained and given a license for performing Necromancy to counteract these unnatural practices.

If a soul is trapped by Necromancy, the Necromancer must supply a steady flow of life essence to keep them from passing on. If the Necromancer dies, the souls they have trapped will be set free to rest in peace. Should however any harm come to the bodies or artifacts the souls are linked to, they are cut off from the necromancer's source yet still trapped in this world, forced to wander and roam until they find peace and sometimes forming a manifestation outside of the spirit world.
